Dr. Sarah Burke-Spolaor and team investigate a missing supermassive black hole in the center of galaxy cluster Abell 2261.

The team used NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory and the Hubble Space Telescope to scope out an area in the center of a distant galaxy cluster where a supermassive black hole should be—but isn’t.
